One of the most important things I learned when I began working as a bridal consultant is the length of time it can take for a wedding gown to be ordered. Did you know that it can actually take 6 to 8 months for your dress to arrive? (especially if you are having any custom work done) Many of the designers make the dress once the order is placed therefore they do not have a lot of stock since there are so many styles offered, and then shipping can take a few weeks depending on the time of year you order your dress! Then you have to remember to leave yourself time for alterations!! It is never to early to select your dress, and even if your wedding is over a year away don't be afraid to say "Yes" once you find the perfect gown!!
I just wanted to share a few helpful hints and things to remember when setting your gown budget! Let's say your budget is $2500, what does that include? There are a few things that ladies may forget when saying "yes to the dress" and that is what other cost are associated with your dress. One is the tax on a gown, which if your budget is $2000 and you pick an $1900 dress, you are going to go over your budget. Your alterations can also add several hundred dollars onto your gown cost, (mine was close to $400 and that was for a hem and a bustle) And lets not forget your shoes and accessories!! So keep these items in mind and decide before you start shopping whether your budget is set just for the dress, and have a separate budget for alterations or if your budget is for all of those extras too!!
So you just got engaged and now your headed out dress shopping! It is one of the best experiences you will ever have, or it should be! One of the biggest mistakes you can make when bridal shopping is having too many opinions when it comes to gown shopping..... It can be very discouraging when you are trying to please everyone in your group because it is impossible!! My suggestion is to bring 1 to 3 of your closest family and friends... Whether its your mother, sister or your dearest friend. Make sure it is someone whose opinion you do truly value, but someone who will be supportive and realize that it is your day and your opinion is the one that matters the most!!!

The first thing I want to talk about is what to bring to bridal appointment! There are three important things to remember! The first thing is the right undergarments....You want to bring a strapless bra (preferably nude), and nude panties...(the panties regardless of color are a must in order to try on the gowns). It is also helpful to bring shoes, it doesn't have to be the shoes you are going to wear, but they should be the right heel height. (some designers offer a free hem so you have to know your heel height in order to take advantage of that) The last thing you want to bring with you is your smile!! (probably the most important thing...other than the panties of course!!) I hope that this will help you get started in your gown shopping!
